What are Ditto Sheets?

Each Ditto Sheet is comprised of three different versions of the same text.

The first version (Step 1) has all the text for straightforward copywork.

The second version (Step 2) shows only the first letter of each word.

The third version (Step 3) shows only the blank lines for the missing words, as well as the text’s punctuation marks.

first

When first learning a text, your student should read the text in its entirety, then copy the text exactly as it is shown, paying careful attention to punctuation and capitalization.

Repeat this step as many times as necessary, depending on the difficulty of the text, and the aptitude of your student. For short texts, usually repeating 2-3 times is sufficient.

The number of repetitions of step 1 is the number of copies that should be printed. Most students will do one sheet per day.

second

After your student has done Step 1 and is beginning to gain confidence that he is recalling the text, he is ready for Step 2.

In step 2, with the help of the first letter of each word, your student writes the text recalling the correct words, spelling, punctuation and capitalization.

Exactly like the previous step, repeat the first letter hints sheets as many times as necessary, depending on the difficulty and aptitude. For short texts, usually repeating 2 times is sufficient.

third

By this point, your student will probably surprise and delight you when he demonstrates his ease in recalling the text.

In Step 3 your student uses the Memory Lines Sheet to write from memory the text exactly as he copied in Step 1.

The length of the blank spaces are carefully designed to match the missing word. This serves to confirm to the student that he is on track in writing the correct text.

So with ALL the versions of the text together (Steps 1, 2, and 3) you have a finished Ditto Sheet!
